Eid decor: 8 ideas for a festive home, from the eve to the morning of Eid

Eid Déco on a walnut buffet: words Eid and Mubarak in wood, mosque photo-lights and two beaded wooden garlands

In short

To decorate the house for Eid, we prepare the entrance the day before with «Eid Mubarak», we decorate the breakfast table (dates in odd numbers before the Eid al-Fitr prayer), we replace the balloons with flowers or branches, and we plan a corner for the children's Eid day. In 2027, Eid al-Fitr is expected to fall on March 9 or 10 and Eid al-Adha on May 16.

The morning of Eid has a special flavor. Waking up earlier than usual, the new clothes laid out on the chair from the night before, the takbir resounding, the smell of msemen. When you live far from extended family, sometimes a little extra effort is needed to recreate that atmosphere. The decor helps a lot, especially for children.

In 2027, Eid al-Fitr is expected to fall around March 9 or 10, and Eid al-Adha around May 16, according to lunar observation. Here are eight ideas from the eve of the festival.

Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha: two celebrations, one joy

Eid (The holiday) means «festivity», which is what it comes down to. Muslims celebrate two of them: the’Eid al-Fitr (Eid al-Fitr), the festival of breaking the fast that concludes Ramadan, and the’Eid al-Adha (Eid al-Adha), the feast of sacrifice, at the time of the pilgrimage. One wishes Eid Mubarak, «Blessed feast day», or, as the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, May Allah be pleased with you and with us (He accepts us and you), «May Allah accept it from us and you.».

«Every people has its own festival, and this is our festival.»

The words of the Prophet ﷺ to Abu Bakr on a day of Eid, reported by al-Bukhari (952) and Muslim (892)

This hadith is valuable to us in Europe. It states that the joy of Eid is legitimate, that it has its rightful place, even when the country’s calendar does not allow for it.

1. The day before: prepare the entrance

On the night before Eid al-Fitr, the takbir is recited: «Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illa Allah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahi l-hamd.» The Quran links them to the end of fasting: «That you may complete the number of days and proclaim the greatness of Allah for guiding you» (Sura Al-Baqara, 2, verse 185).

This is the right time to transform the entrance: the word «Ramadan» is replaced by «Eid» next to «Mubarak». The children discover it by getting up.

2. A breakfast table that makes a statement

On the morning of Eid al-Fitr, the Sunnah is to eat before leaving for prayer: the Prophet ﷺ did not leave until he had eaten a few dates, in odd numbers (reported by al-Bukhari, 953). A simple but neat table is sufficient: a clean tablecloth, msemen, baghrir or gazelle horns according to the families, a plate of dates, tea. In the center, «Eid Mubarak» in wooden letters.

3. Flowers and branches instead of balloons

Metallic balloons and plastic garlands have invaded the holidays, including Eid. They make an impact for a day, then end up in the trash. A bouquet of fresh flowers, branches of olive or eucalyptus in a jar, a garland made of recycled paper cut with the children the day before: it’s more beautiful, and it tells a story.

4. A corner for the children’s eidiya

The’eidiya (Eid al-Adha), the money or the small gift that we give to the children on Eid Day is one of their best memories. We can give it a real place: a wooden box, envelopes with their names on a tray, a small note slipped inside. For gift ideas, we have made A comprehensive guide to what can be offered for Eid.

5. Fragrance the house before the arrival of the guests

On the day of Eid, the house is not left empty. Umar offered the Prophet ﷺ the day to buy a cloak «to dress you on the day of Eid and to receive the delegations» (reported by al-Bukhari, 948): he refused because it was made of silk, but to look beautiful for the festival was a matter of course. Receiving in a clean, tidy, and fragrant house is part of that same attention. A diffuser in the entrance, lit as soon as the prayer is finished, welcomes everyone.

6. A soft light for the evening

In the evening, when the family is still there and the children are asleep on the sofas, a soft light prolongs the celebration. A photo-frame on the coffee table, a few candles, and we keep chatting until late into the night.

7. A wall of memories

Every year, a family photo on the morning of Eid, in front of the same wall, with the same wooden letters. After ten years, it’s a treasure: you see the children grow up, the clothes change, the grandparents who still accompany us or more often. A simple and bright wall, a word «Eid Mubarak» that we take out every year, and the tradition creates itself.

8. For Eid al-Adha: keeping the meaning of the sacrifice

Eid al-Adha is more focused on sharing: the meat from the sacrifice is distributed among the family, the loved ones, and those in need. The decor can be simple, but the lunch table is very important. The Quran reminds us of the essentials:

Allah will not attain their flesh and blood, but He will attain the piety from you.

«Neither their flesh nor their blood will reach Allah; but what reaches Him from you is piety.»

The Quran, Surah Al-Hajj (22), verse 37 · translation of the meaning

A word «Sabr» or «Alhamdulillah» placed on the buffet that day is a beautiful reminder of the story of Ibrahim and Ismail, of their patience and trust.

A decor that comes back every year

The best decoration for Eid is the one that you take away with a smile the following year. Wooden letters, a photo holder, a box for eidiya: few objects, but that carry the memories. If you are preparing for the month ahead, our article Ramadan decor It will help you organize everything.
