The morning of Eid has a special flavor. Waking up earlier than usual, the new clothes laid out on the chair from the night before, the takbir resounding, the smell of msemen. When you live far from extended family, sometimes a little extra effort is needed to recreate that atmosphere. The decor helps a lot, especially for children.

In 2027, Eid al-Fitr is expected to fall around March 9 or 10, and Eid al-Adha around May 16, according to lunar observation. Here are eight ideas from the eve of the festival.

Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha: two celebrations, one joy

Eid (The holiday) means «festivity», which is what it comes down to. Muslims celebrate two of them: the’Eid al-Fitr (Eid al-Fitr), the festival of breaking the fast that concludes Ramadan, and the’Eid al-Adha (Eid al-Adha), the feast of sacrifice, at the time of the pilgrimage. One wishes Eid Mubarak, «Blessed feast day», or, as the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, May Allah be pleased with you and with us (He accepts us and you), «May Allah accept it from us and you.».

«Every people has its own festival, and this is our festival.»

The words of the Prophet ﷺ to Abu Bakr on a day of Eid, reported by al-Bukhari (952) and Muslim (892)

This hadith is valuable to us in Europe. It states that the joy of Eid is legitimate, that it has its rightful place, even when the country’s calendar does not allow for it.

1. The day before: prepare the entrance

On the night before Eid al-Fitr, the takbir is recited: «Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illa Allah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahi l-hamd.» The Quran links them to the end of fasting: «That you may complete the number of days and proclaim the greatness of Allah for guiding you» (Sura Al-Baqara, 2, verse 185).

This is the right time to transform the entrance: the word «Ramadan» is replaced by «Eid» next to «Mubarak». The children discover it by getting up.
